‘Make the drycleaner
wait’
“Iron less often and let the
drycleaner wait,” is how it’s touted on Whirlpool’s web
site. The latest offering from
Whirlpool is smaller and considerably less expensive than the
Personal Valet the company brought out two years ago. That unit
measured five feet tall, three feet wide and 15 inches deep
with a price tag of about $1,500.
The Fabric Freshener, which the company
says “releases wrinkles and breaks up odors, quickly and
easily, without chemicals or detergents,” folds into a
case that is 10 inches by 33 inches by 12 inches for storage
when not in use. It’ll be taller than that when unfolded
for use, as shown in the picture. It lists for $249.
Garments are placed in a zip-up bag with
a cup of distilled water, one of three care cycles is selected,
then the Freshener is turned on. After steaming off all the
distilled water in the cup, there’s a drying cycle
followed by a cool-down cycle. The unit can “smooth and
deodorize” two garments in about 30 minutes.
According to the product literature,
“the extended steam immersion breaks down the odor
molecules while the dry cycle speeds up evaporation, which
carries away the remnants of the compounds.”
