Restoration specialists
convene in March

The Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration will be heading to Palm Springs, CA, from March 15-19 for its 60th annual convention.
This year’s educational programming promises solutions to critical issues that commonly plague owners and managers of cleaning and restoration firms.
“The first goal of our convention program is to strike a balance between key business issues, such as managing small businesses, profit and overhead, strategic accounting, marketing, and business diversification for long-term growth, and fundamental topics like leather care, evaluating and caring for oriental rugs, and environmental matters,” said ASCR President Ken Adams. “Secondly, we’ve invited new cutting edge speakers to share their unique perspectives, as well as engage in meaningful dialog to generate ideas and information that creates a competitive advantage for our members.”
The lengthy list of guest speakers at the convention will include Martin Gurian of DesignTex, Inc., who will review how his company evaluates performance, stain resistance and cleanability of high performance upholstery fabrics applied in sports stadiums, healthcare, restaurants, casinos, airports and transportation.
Gurian will also present “Green Fabrics and Furnishings, Greener Solvents, Green Cleaning: Are These Greener Pastures?” alongside Melinda Burn, Ph.D., of INVISTA, Inc. She will look at the changing landscape for solvents and other cleaning products while Dr. Steve Spivak, technical advisor for ASCR, joins in to provide some additional input on the topic of “green cleaning.”
“Recent Trends in Microbial Remediation” by Geoff A. Clark of MGC Ventures, Ltd., is a topic of another seminar, which will cover everything from fecal coliform bacterial testing to clearance testing for mold and how to locate and address continuous fungal growth.
Marketing expert Jeff Tweedy of Syngenta will share some of his company’s extensive knowledge on segmenting consumers in the carpet cleaning marketplace with “A Different Way to View Your Customers and Yourself.”
Also slated to take place is a leather care workshop by Patrick Dorgan of The Leather Institute and a seminar on “The Challenges of Mold Litigation” by Michael W. Duffy, Esq., Childress Duffy Goldblatt, Ltd.
Michael McGuiness, CIH, R.K. Occupational & Environmental Analysis, Inc.,  will bring his ideas to the podium on “Smart Planning for Mold Remediation Projects.”
Throughout the week, ASCR will gather several different panels of experts to speak, as well. Topics will range from “Nosocomial Infections in the Hospital Environment” to “Hurricane Havoc” to “Diversification or Specialization.”
A full convention schedule with a rundown of all of the speakers and topics is located at ASCR’s web site.
Prior to the educational programming, attendees can relax a little with a golf tournament benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities on Tuesday, March 15.
The shotgun scramble event will tee off at 12:30 p.m. at Tahquitz Creek Country Club. The cost is $200 per golfer, which includes greens fees, cart, range balls, lunch, beer afterwards, gift and a contribution to Ronald McDonald House Charities.
A record number of exhibitors participated in last year’s ASCR convention, so the association is hoping to shatter those figures again this year. A host of new products and technologies from long-time exhibitors, as well as newcomers, will be open to the public from 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday.
Registration costs $670 for ASCR members; however, any other member from the same firm can sign up for a reduced price of $645 each. Non-members pay $870 a piece.
Spouse members can register for $450 each; that price includes all meal functions, a group tour and access to the exhibit hall. It does not include admission to any of the educational sessions.
Online registration forms are available at ASCR’s web site.
Hotel rooms are available at the Wyndham Palm Springs Hotel, located at 888 Tahquitz Canyon Way in Palm Springs. For reservations, call (760) 322-6000.
