SDA releases 2005 educational schedule for
ITC in Lubbock
The Southwest
Drycleaners Association will
be doing its part in 2005 to make sure drycleaners in the
region maintain their skills by attending training classes.
The association has announced its
schedule for the year at its International Textile Center of
Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
The first session, which will cover stain
removal, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday April
23, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 24.
Instructor Chris Allsbrooks will
demonstrate proper stain removal techniques, teaching students
how to save time and avoid garment damage while dealing with
difficult stains.
She will discuss numerous related topics,
such as the use of bleaches, specialty fabrics and how to
organize stain removal tools and equipment.
The course will cost SDA/IFI members $195
each; non-members pay $295.
From June 13-17, Jane Zellers will visit
the school to deliver a one-week general course.
She will examine a variety of issues,
including customer service, fibers and fabrics, basic stain
removal, drycleaning technology, wetcleaning procedures, dye
stripping, finishing/pressing techniques and tips for producing
the “perfect” shirt.
She will also illustrate how proper
equipment layout and workflow play an important role in an
efficient production department.
Students will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on
Friday.
Tuition is $485 per SDA member and $510
for other IFI members. Non-members pays $575 each. Tuition
includes a box lunch with each full day of class.
Zellers will be back to teach a stain
removal class later in the year from Nov. 14-16. The two-day
course will primarily focus on how dyes, pigments, prints and
finishes are an integral part of the cleaning process.
She will also help attendees recognize
terms such as wetside, dryside, alkaline and acid.
Class hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. on the first two days, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on
Wednesday.
The cost is $315 for SDA members, $385
for other IFI members, and $450 for all other students.
Finally, SDA will round out its ITC
courses with an advanced stain removal course from Nov. 16-18,
also taught by Zellers.
The class will meet from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
on Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, and 8:30 to
11:30 a.m. on Friday.
The two-day course will emphasize
advanced stain removal techniques for more experienced
drycleaners.
Students will gain a better understanding
of fiber content, weaves, garment construction and how to test
fiber content by burn testing. There will also be hands-on
testing using bleaches, digesters and KOH.
SDA members who wish to attend pay $305
each; other IFI members must pay $370. Non-members will be
charged $435 per person.
In addition to its ITC courses, SDA also
has plans to co-host an outreach seminar on stain removal with
IFI on Thursday, April 21 in San Antonio, Texas. It will run
from 7 to 10 p.m. and cost SDA/IFI members $35. Non-members pay
$45.
To register for the seminar, contact IFI
at (800) 638-2627, ext. 144. For information on the SDA school
courses, call (210) 826-4684.
