SDA to teach basic and advanced stain removal l
Those new to the drycleaning industry would be wise to learn basic stain removal skills, but even older veterans may stand to learn a new trick or two on the spotting board, as well.
The Southwest Drycleaners Association will be offering classes aimed to help each and every type of cleaner this November.
Both basic and advanced courses will be held at the association’s school, located in the International Textile Center at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
The first course (#05-3) will meet from 8: 30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 14 and 15, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16.
Instructor Jane Zellers will advise cleaners on basic proper stain removal techniques. Students will learn how dyes, pigments, prints and finishes are all vital concerns to the cleaning process, as well as understand the proper use of stain removal tools on a daily basis.
Those who attend will be able to recognize terms such as wetside, dryside, alkaline and acid. The 2 1Ž2 day course will divide class time between a lecture format, demonstrations and hands-on work.
Tuition is $315 for SDA members and $385 for other members. Everybody else pays $450 each. A box lunch for each full day of class is included with the cost.
Those who complete that course will be perfectly suited to take the advanced stain removal class from Nov. 16-18.
The class will meet from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
The two day course will focus on more advanced stain removal techniques and attendees will gain a better understanding of fiber content, weaves, garment construction and how to test fiber content by burn testing.
Zellers will also provide hands-on training on the use of bleaches, digesters and KOH.
The cost is $305 for SDA members, $370 for other members, and $435 for non-members.
There is a maximin limit of 24 students per class, so cleaners planning on attending should register early by calling (210) 826-4684.
Also on SDA’s upcoming schedule is a seminar on customer service to be taught by IFI Instructor Lorraine Muir.
It will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. in Little Rock, AR, on Saturday, Oct. 8.
The seminar is designed to help cleaners who are frustrated by angry or dissatisfied customers who blame them for problems that were not a by-product of the cleaning process, but rather, should have been noticed initially at the front counter and properly explained.
Muir will outline some proven customer service techniques that will help cleaners improve their overall quality of service, leading to better customer retention and satisfaction.
Some of the topics to be covered during the seminar include: behaviors that drive customers away; building trust, integrity and value; points you should remember when working with your customer; telephone skills; identifying garments with particular problems; and working with challenging customers.
The cost of the class is $99 per IFI/SDA member and $89 for each additional member from the same plant. Non-members must pay $129 each. The cost includes lunch and all materials.
