IFI sets school courses for 2006
The International Fabricare Institute’s School of Drycleaning is beginning its second year at the new Laurel, MD, facility with a range of drycleaning and special interest courses planned for 2006.
The $1.8 million training facility features a practical area with 13 stain removal boards, two shirt units, two pants units and three pressing units, and tensioning equipment along with cleaning machines that offer three solvent choices in addition to wetcleaning.
More than 30 companies have contributed equipment and supplies to the school.
Classroom instruction covers everything from elementary stain removal and fabric basics to plant layout, business analysis, and customer service.
Back by popular demand in 2006 is the option of sending employees to IFI for just a few days to gain specialized knowledge in stain removal or wedding gown care.
IFI also offers several “closer to home” educational opportunities for drycleaners who want to deepen their knowledge or bring new staff up to speed in various areas of the field, including self-study courses, educational videos, personalized in-plant training, and regional seminars.
Scholarships are available thanks to a variety of generous companies and organizations.
The three-week General Dry Cleaning course is offered in two phases.
The one-week Introduction to Dry Cleaning course is designed to reinforce the principles of drycleaning for owners and employees, focusing on elementary stain removal, drycleaning basics, fabric basics, finishing procedures for pants, coats, and skirts, assembly, invoicing and customer service.
The two-week Advanced Dry Cleaning course is for individuals who have completed the introductory course or employees and owners/managers with more than one year of production experience.
The advanced course covers advanced stain removal procedures and bleaches, silk finishing, plant layout and workflow, fabric characteristics and fiber identification, drycleaning, wetcleaning, production costs and business analysis, regulations and care labeling.
The first session of the one-week Introductory course next year will be Jan. 23-27 with additional starting dates of April 24, July 17 and Oct. 16.
Registration is $450 for IFI members and $695 for non-members.
The first Advanced Dry Cleaning course will be Jan 30-Feb. 10 with additional starting dates for the two-week session on May 1, July 24 and Oct. 23.
Registration is $900 for IFI members and $1,390 for non-members
The two courses may be taken separately, but if taking them consecutively as one continuous three-week course reduces the total tuition to $1,250 for IFI members and $1,995 for non-members.
A three-day Stain Removal course will be offered twice in 2006, March 22-24 and June 5-7.
The tuition is $299 for members and $449 for non-members.
Caring for Wedding Gowns will be offered June 8-9 so drycleaners can prepare to meet the needs of June brides.
The tuition is $199 for members and $299 for non-members.
