Florida school offers counter training, wetcleaning classes
The first and most important step in combatting problem garments and stains is awareness. In order for spotters to have a fighting chance, they have to know what they’re up against. The front counter staff plays a vital role in that battle.
Plant owners and managers who want to make sure that their front counter employees properly inspect for potential problems when accepting customers’ clothes should consider an upcoming course at the East Coast School of Dry Cleaning.
Located at 1965 West 9th Street in Riveria Beach, FL, the school will host a hands-on training class on “Counter Training” on Saturday, Dec. 3.
Industry experts Dan Eisen and Steve Jennings will detail the garment acceptance process, emphasizing the use of a “spectralight” device that aides employees in the detection of stains and problem garments.
Of course, once garments are inspected and accepted, there is the issue of how to clean them properly. In many instances, wetcleaning is a smart, viable option for the job.
Instructor Eisen will be joined by Rayner Canedo to teach a class on the subject on Saturday, Dec. 10.
The duo will offer tips on wetcleaning, including an examination on the proper use of wetcleaning chemicals to clean wools, silks and other fabrics safely.
Those who attend will also learn details on the use of chemicals to set dyes, soften fabrics and prevent shrinkage, as well as how to best program wetcleaning equipment.
Cost for either course is also $225 per person.

NCALC looks ahead to 2006 convention
Plans are underway for the North Carolina Association of Launderers and Cleaners’ 2006 convention on Memorial Day weekend at the Atlantic Beach Sheraton.
Because it will be the 100th year of the convention, NCALC will be displaying historical artifacts and memorabilia throughout the event.
Already, the association has planned a Young Cleaners Function for Friday evening where younger cleaners can enjoy hot dogs, ice cream sundaes and a movie while their parents attend the traditional seafood feast with karaoke and dancing.
The Saturday and Sunday allied trades table tops have been lengthened to run from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. while the educational sessions will follow the usual format, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending at noon.
So far, there have been verbal commitments from a number of speakers, including Gary Dawson, owner of Bellaire Bluffs Cleaners in Florida and IFI president-elect. He will deliver the keynote address.
Dennis McCrory, president of the Golomb Group, is also slated to speak, as well as industry legend Stan Caplan.
Plans are also on the table for a golf tournament if enough members are interested.
For more information, visit NCALC’s web site located at www.ncalc.org or call the association office at (336) 389-9011.
