A Special Tribute
Carl Gardner would have been pleased. A charity golf tournament he founded 15 years ago with the Central Pennsylvania Drycleaners Association had its most successful year ever, raising $8,000 for the York County, PA, Special Olympics.
Unfortunately Gardner, who died last year after a bout with cancer, wasn’t around to participate this time, but the record-breaking success of the tournament was no doubt due in part to many people wanting to join CPDA in honoring their long-time member by lining up as sponsors this year. The $8,000 raised this year topped by at least $3,000 the amount raised for Special Olympics in any previous year.
A check for that amount was presented at last month’s CPDA holiday party. Special Olympic athlete Loretta Claiborne spoke to the group about the difference that Special Olympics has made in her life as well as many other participants.
For Gardner, the golf tournament combined two of his favorite activities. In addition to being an avid golfer, he was also constantly involved in charity work. He organized a Katrina/Salvation Army Relief Fund through the Pennsylvania and Delaware Cleaners Association, put together a Coats for Kids drive with CPDA and, through his church, participated in building a school and recreation center in a poor area of Guatemala.
