NCALC plans convention, co-hosts DSCA seminars
The North Carolina Association of Launderers and Cleaners will be hosting its annual Carolina Clean convention this year during Memorial Day weekend, May 25-27.
The event will be held at the Atlantic Beach Sheraton in Atlantic Beach, NC.
Because the association officially adopted its first bylaws on June 10, 1907 at its initial convention in Charlotte, this year will mark the 100th actual birthday for NCALC, which plans to celebrate with a “Beach Birthday Bash.” Already, NCALC plans to have karaoke at a family fun party on Friday night featuring a traditional luau with costumes, hula, limbo and shag contests.
Also throughout the weekend, they will host a President’s Reception and a Banquet and Live Auction.
Those who plan on attending can take advantage of special discounted rates of $139 per night at the Sheraton. Call (800) 214-0258 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for reservations; mention your affiliation with NCALC. There will also be multi-bedroom condos available next door at the Island Beach and Racquet Club. Call (800) 786-7368 for reservations.
Many convention activities are still in the planning stages at this time, including the educational programming. However, NCALC has received firm commitments from two main speakers.
Mike Halford of W.C. Rouse & Son — which has offices in Greensboro, Raleigh, Wilmington, Charlotte and Spartanburg, SC — will present a seminar on “Boiler Efficiency, Maintenance and Safety.”
Jan Barlow, owner/operator of Jan’s Professional Cleaners in Clio, MI, also plans to conduct two 90-minutes sessions. She will focus on “Finding, Hiring, Training & Retaining Good Employees” and “How Productivity Relates to Profit.”
NCALC is also working on securing Tony Pendola from the state DENR’s Small Business Assistance Program to discuss how cleaners can understand and comply with the new perc NESHAP.
Finally, NCALC also has invited Dr. John Powers, who is in charge of the state’s Dry Cleaning Solvent Cleanup Act program. He will bring attendees up to date on the status of the program and the risk-based cleanup rules.
Also, in the coming months, NCALC will join together with the state DENR to bring cleaners several upcoming seminars on the status of the state ’s Dry-Cleaning Solvent Cleanup Act program.
Upcoming dates and locations for the seminars include: Tuesday, April 3 at Fuddrucker ’s, located at 4411 W. Wendover Ave. in Greensboro; Tuesday, April 17 at the Ranch House Restaurant at 5614 Wilkinson Blvd. in Charlotte; and Tuesday, May 8 at Swannanoa Cleaners at 780 Hendersonville Rd. in Asheville.
During the seminars, Al Chapman, a DSCA project manager, will discuss how the program works and everything else cleaners need to know about it. He will be joined by Eric Swope, Compliance Coordinator for the program.
The seminars will coincide with NCALC’s open forum Dutch dinner meetings, which will take place after the seminars from 6 to 9 p.m. The Asheville dinner meeting on May 8 will be held at TGI Fridays at 115 Hendersonville Rd.
