MILD plans annual convention in historic Port Huron this July
Thomas Edison may have been known as the “Wizard of Menlo Park” in New Jersey after acquiring over 1,000 patents throughout his lifetime, but he spent his formative years in Port Huron, Michigan.
These days, the city is home to the Edison Depot Museum — which is housed inside the historic Fort Gratiot depot (where Edison worked as a news butcher between 1859 and 1863).
Nearby is the Thomas Edison Inn, which will be the site of this year’s annual convention for the Michigan Institute of Laundering and Drycleaning, July 27-28.
Discounted room rates at the inn are available for a rate of $99 per night for those who call (800) 451-7991 and mention their affiliation with MILD.
The festivities for the convention will kick off on Friday evening with “An Evening Under the Stars” from 6 to 9 p.m.
Attendees will board the “Huron Lady II” boat for a cruise along the St. Clair River and lower Lake Huron. There will be appetizers and a cash bar, and cleaners will have plenty of time for networking and catching up with old friends.
On Saturday, MILD will get down to business with educational sessions from 9:30 am until noon. The topics and speakers will be announced at a later date.
At 12:30 p.m., golfers can tee up at the association’s annual outing.
Non-golfers will have plenty of activities nearby to choose from. Many may want to tour the Fort Gratiot lighthouse, which was built in 1814, or the Carnegie Center of Arts and History, which contains everything from wooly mammoth bones to the remains of a Woodlands Culture Fishing Village.
The Thomas Edison Museum celebrates the place where the American inventor conducted his first scientific experiments. An authentic railcar with a recreation of Edison ’s mobile printing shop and chemistry laboratory is part of the display.
Also during the conference will be the Blue Water Offshore Race, which takes place from July 27-29 on the St. Clair River. It will feature powerboat races in different classes — all of which are part of the Great Lakes Silver Cup Series and the Offshore Super Series. For more information, visit www.stclairrace.com.
On Saturday evening, MILD will host a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by its annual awards and banquet dinner.
Afterward, the association and outgoing president Julie Plassman will host an “Afterglow Party.”
