First of three SDA classes at ITC school in June
The Southwest Drycleaners Association will host its first educational offering of 2007 at the International Textile Center next month.
The school is located on the campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
Instructor Jane Zellers will teach a one-week General Fabricare course from June 4-8 that is ideal for newcomers to the industry, as well as those who have been in the industry for a few years.
It counts as nine points toward IFI’s Award of Excellence program.
The course will cover a variety of drycleaning-related topics, including basic customer service, fibers and fabrics, drycleaning technology, basic stain removal, wetcleaning procedures, dye stripping, and the classification of garments for quality cleaning and reduced claims.
Attendees will learn finishing/pressing techniques for drycleaning and tips for producing the perfect shirt.
Zellers will also discuss workflow, proper equipment and layout and its role in production, and methods for achieving productivity in addition to quality.
She will emphasize the importance of recognizing a “problem garment” before it becomes one.
Class time will be divided between classroom presentations and practical application; therefore, much of it will be hands-on training.
The class will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
Tuition is $495 for SDA members, $520 for other IFI members, and $585 for everybody else. The cost includes a box lunch for each full day of class. The registration deadline is May 19.
Later in the year, school will be back in session twice in November.
First up is a stain removal course from Nov. 12-14. It will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the first two days, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Zellers will outline proper stain removal techniques. Students will learn about dyes, pigments and prints and be able to recognize terms such as wetside, dryside, alkaline and acid.
The cost is $325 for SDA members, $395 for other IFI members, and $460 for non-members.
Those who complete the course will be well prepared to take an advanced stain removal course at ITC Nov. 14-16.
It will meet from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
The two-day course will look at more advanced stain removal techniques, including such topics as fiber content, weaves, garment construction, and how to test fiber content by burn testing.
Students will also receive hands-on training using bleaches, digesters and KOH.
The cost to attend is $315 for members, $380 for other IFI members, and $445 for everybody else.
Both stain removal classes count as five points each toward the IFI Award of Excellence program.
Space is limited, so early registration is recommended for all SDA courses.
Those who register are encouraged to bring their own problem garments to any class they attend.
