SDA hosts cleaning courses at ITC in June, November
Before heading out to Las Vegas for the Clean Show this June, cleaners will have a chance to take advantage of an excellent educational program offered by the Southwest Drycleaners Association.
The class will be held from June 4-8 at the International Textile Center located on the campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX.
The one-week course, taught by long-time instructor Jane Zellers, will offer an overview on general fabricare.
It is ideal for newcomers to the industry, as well as those who have a few years’ worth of experience already.
The course will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
It counts as nine points toward IFI’s Award of Excellence program.
Those who attend will learn more about several drycleaning-related topics, including: basic customer service, fibers and fabrics, drycleaning technology, basic stain removal, wetcleaning procedures, dye stripping, and the classification of garments for quality cleaning and reduced claims.
Zellers will also emphasize workflow, proper equipment and layout and its role in production, and methods for achieving productivity in addition to quality.
She will also look at finishing/pressing techniques for drycleaning, tips for producing the perfect shirt, and how to recognize a “problem garment” before it becomes one.
Class time will be divided between classroom presentations and practical application. Plenty of time will be devoted to hands-on training.
Tuition is $495 for SDA members, $520 for other IFI members, and $585 for everybody else.
The cost includes a box lunch for each full day of class.
Cleaners interested in focussing their studies mostly on stain removal will have two opportunities at ITC later in the year.
SDA will host a basic stain removal course from Nov. 12-14, which will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the first two days, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
During the class, Zellers will outline proper stain removal techniques, speaking in depth about dyes, pigments and prints, as well as terms such as wetside, dryside, alkaline and acid.
The cost is $325 for SDA members, $395 for other IFI members, and $460 for non-members.
Those who complete the class will be well prepared to take an advanced stain removal course from Nov. 14-16.
It will meet from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
The two-day course looks at more advanced stain removal techniques, including: fiber content, weaves, garment construction, and how to test fiber content by burn testing. Students will also receive hands-on training using bleaches, digesters and KOH.
The cost to attend is $315 for members, $380 for other IFI members, and $445 for everybody else.
Both classes count as five points each toward the IFI Award of Excellence program.
Those who register can bring their own problem garments to any class they attend.
