MCA hopes to combat winter cold with 3rd blanket drive
The coldest temperature ever recorded in the state of Minnesota was 60 degrees below zero. That was over eleven years ago in the city of Tower.
Typically, winter temperatures in the state run a little bit warmer than that, but it ’s not uncommon for citizens in some areas to endure average minimum temperatures below zero.
With such an extreme cold climate on the horizon, it’s a good thing that the Minnesota Cleaners Association has already begun its annual blanket drive.
“As people begin to prepare for colder months, we ask them to consider donating a blanket or two, ” said MCA Executive Secretary Amber Bullock. “It’s a simple way to offer the gift of warmth to a person in need.”
This year, the drive will run through September and October as over 70 cleaners work together to voluntarily collect, clean and bag donated blankets.
When finished, those blankets will be given to Sharing and Caring Hands in Minneapolis, an assistance center for inner-city poor that serves 20,000 clients each month.
From there, they will distribute the blankets to those who need them the most in the harsh upcoming winter.
The association first began this campaign three years ago. In that time, they have delivered more than 2,500 blankets to Sharing and Caring Hands.
As part of the 2007 program, MCA will provide posters for its members to announce the drive to its customers.
Participating members who need more posters should contact the MCA office by calling (952) 426-1670, or send e-mail to Amber Bullock at amber@minnesotadrycleaners.org.
More information is also available by visiting MCA’s site: www.minnesotadrycleaners.org.
