During the Clean Show in Las Vegas in June, the Drycleaning Laundry Institute
named the North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources as
one of its 2007 Green Field Award winners.
The award was recently presented locally to NCDENR Secretary Williams G. Ross,
Jr. by
NCALC’s Past President Mack Davis, who is DLI’s District 2 Director.
NCDENR was honored for its 2001 Study Group Report on Alternatives to the Predominant Dry Cleaning
Processes.
The study compared the environmental and public health impacts of solvents,
processes and equipment. It also focussed on the financial impact on cleaners
who convert to alternate solvents for cleaning garments.
In presenting the award, Davis thanked Ross for the “fair and even-handed way the department had conducted the study” and the excellent working relationship that the association enjoys with the
department
’s Small Business Ombudsman, Small Business Environmental Assistance Program and
Dry-cleaning Solvent Cleanup Act Program.
Also in attendance at the ceremony were Gary Hunt, director of the Division of
Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance, whose division produced the
2001 study; Chris Edwards, vice-president of governmental affairs for NCALC;
Sto Fox, the association
’s executive director; and Dr. Manfred Wentz, president of Textile Care
International in Apex, who received the Green Fields Award in 2001.
In addition to presenting an environmental award, NCALC played the role of
recipient when it was named winner of the
“Fourth Annual Trade Association Environmental Leadership Award” by the National Steering Committee for the EPA Small Business Ombudsman/Small
Business Environmental Assistance Programs.
NCALC was cited for its cooperation, support and promotion of the EPA Small
Business Environmental Assistance Program in North Carolina.
The association was also honored for leadership in creating the North Carolina
Dry-Cleaning Solvent Cleanup Act Program and efforts to maintain it, and its
unflagging support of NCDENR
’s 2001 Study on solvents.
