SDA to host ITC spotting courses with Jane Zellers
When it comes to stain removal, newcomers to the industry have a lot of knowledge left to obtain, but even wily old veterans can stand to refreshen their skills on the spotting board from time to time.
The Southwest Drycleaners Association has tailored its educational classes to meet the needs of all cleaners, regardless of their experience level.
This November, the association will hosts both basic and advanced courses at the International Textile Center, located on the campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
The courses will be taught by instructor Jane Zellers, one of the most sought-after drycleaning experts in the country.
First up, she will oversee a two-and-a-half day course that emphasizes proper stain removal techniques for cleaners who are new to the industry or have little overall production experience.
The class will meet from Nov. 12-14 at the following times: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Those who attend will explore topics such as dyes, pigments, prints and finishes, as well as terms like wetside, dryside, alkaline and acid.
Students will also gain a better understanding of the proper use of stain removal tools on a daily basis.
Class will be divided between lecture, class discussion, demonstrations, and hands-on experience. Once completed, students will be prepared to take the advanced class at the school offered from Nov. 14-16.
The two-day course will meet from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday; 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
It will emphasize advanced training on proper stain removal techniques. Students will learn about fiber content, weaves, garment construction and how to test fiber content by burn testing.
Cleaners will also be given hands-on training using bleaches, digesters and KOH.
Both the basic and advanced courses count as five DLI/IFI Award of Excellence points.
Tuition for the basic course is $325 for SDA members and $395 for all other DLI/IFI members. Non-members must pay $460 each.
The cost of the advanced course is $315 for SDA members and $380 for all other DLI/IFI members. Non-members must pay $445 in order to attend.
That cost includes a box lunch which is provided for each full day of class.
As an added bonus, attendees are encouraged to bring their own problem garments to work on during any class.
For more information on any of the upcoming classes provided by SDA, contact the association ’s office at (210) 826-4684.
While the November courses will be the last public events at SDA for the calendar year, the association has already begun work on its 2008 schedule.
SDA will host its annual Cleaners Showcase convention next year from April 4-6 at the Arlington Convention Center in Arlington, Texas.
Currently, the association is offering a special on booth prices. For a 10' x 10' draped booth, members pay $670 and non-members pay $790.
The price, however, is only good for a limited time. The deadline is Sept. 30, 2007.
