2008 classes begin next month at DLI
The Drycleaning and Laundry Institute (formerly IFI) will kick off its 2008 in course offerings next month at its School of Drycleaning Technology in Laurel, MD.
The first one-week introductory to drycleaning course will begin Jan. 28.
The course emphasizes all drycleaning basics for plant owners and employees with less production experience, or those who need a review of cleaning fundamentals.
Class instructors will explore a variety of topics, such as fibers and fabrics, the principles of drycleaning, workflow and assembly, invoicing, cleaning and drying cycles, and drycleaning machinery.
Attendees will also learn about basic stain removal procedures, as well as how to finish pants, coats and skirts.
Tuition for the one-week course is $695 for members and $1,049 for non-members.
It will meet on the following course dates: Jan. 28 to Feb. 1; April 21-25; July 21-25; and Oct. 20-24.
Once the introductory class is completed, students can continue their training with the two-week advanced drycleaning course, which is intended for cleaners with more hands-on experience and knowledge of basic stain removal and finishing techniques.
The advanced course will tackle complex subject matter, such as specialty fabrics, fabric identification, advanced stain removal procedures and bleaches.
Students will also learn how to finish garments such as blouses, dresses, ties, pleats, pile fabrics, silks and rayons.
Other topics will include: wetcleaning, solvents, filtration, distillation, equipment troubleshooting, regulations and care labeling, and customer service and business management.
The scheduled dates for the advanced course include: Feb. 4 to 15; April 28 to May 9; July 28 to Aug. 8; and Oct. 27 to Nov. 7.
The cost is $1,149 for members and $1,649 for non-members. DLI affiliates who sign up for the introductory and advanced courses concurrently, which becomes a sinlge three-week general drycleaning course, can save an extra $349 in tuition.
Also on DLI’s schedule are two week-long courses on the practical application of cleaning and stain removal. They are scheduled for March 10 and Sept. 15.
The course will examine a wide variety of topics, including: fibers and fabrics; principles of drycleaning; solvents; detergents and moisture; filtration and distillation; drying and vapor recovery; stain removal agents and stain removal tools, and more.
The cost is $695 for members and $1,049 for non-members.
To help some students out with financing, DLI offers $40,000 in tuition assistance through scholarships. The money comes from 15 donating organizations altogether.
