First class for an old hand
John “Jay” Harvey is the newest instructor at the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute, but he’s no newcomer to the industry — or to DLI for that matter.
“I was born and raised in the drycleaning business,” Harvey said. “I spent a number of years doing mechanical repair work, took courses on boiler engineering and HVAC.”

Over the last 25 years, he said, he has worked on “everything in the plant from the front door to the back door.”
Harvey joined DLI’s teaching staff in October and was quickly thrown into the fire of a three-week General Drycleaning course at the School of Drycleaning Technology’s last course of 2007.
“This was my first class as an instructor for DLI and I couldn’t have wished for a better group of people,” he said. “They were interesting, fun, and excited to learn. It was a wonderful first experience.”
Harvey worked for DLI as a building maintenance contractor, doing everything from fixing boilers and presses to working with the ventilation system. Now he’ll share his experience with students and callers to DLI’s support hotline.
“It’s great to have Jay on board,” said Brian Johnson, DLI’s director of training and technical services. “His knowledge of mechanical operations and maintenance of equipment will take our member support to a whole new level of service.”
Harvey can be reached by phone at (800) 638-2627 or e-mail at jharvey@ifi.org.
