SCRD reports on clean-up progress
The State Coalition for Remediation of Drycleaners (SCRD) has released new and updated documents on its web site related to its work on soil and groundwater remediation in the drycleaning industry.
SCRD is made up of representatives from state governments that have established programs to fund remediation of drycleaning sites and provides a forum for them to share programmatic, technical, and environmental information. The web site is www.drycleancoalition.org.
A recently posted document by Bill Linn of Florida, “A Chronology of Historical Developments in Drycleaning,” contains historical information on drycleaning solvents, equipment and regulations.
SCRD has also released its updated version of “State Drycleaner Remediation Programs,” which contains information on the current drycleaner remediation programs across the United States.
Other recently posted documents include the paper “Comparisons of Remedial Systems Employed at Drycleaner Sites” by Eric Cathcart of South Carolina, Bob Jurgens of Kansas, and Bill Linn of Florida.
In this paper, the SCRD technical subgroup analyzed data from more than 100 site profiles collected from drycleaning site remediation projects across the United States to evaluate the various remedial technologies and assessment techniques used at chlorinated and petroleum solvent sites.
Another recent paper, “State Approaches for Drycleaner Remediation Programs,” identifies and discusses five primary components of state drycleaner clean-up programs: funding mechanisms, eligibility, prioritization, implementation, and benefits.
SCRD reported that remediation is currently being conducted at drycleaning sites in all 13 member states. As of November 2007, statistics from those states showed that of 3,543 sites in drycleaning programs, contamination assessment work had been initiated on 1,803 sites and assessment work had been completed on 802 sites. Remediation had been initiated on 401 sites and was reported completed on 142 sites; 411 sites had been closed.
Current member states include Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin. California, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia, which do not have formal programs but are active in drycleaner remediation under other authorities, also participate in coalition activities.
