MILD management series heads into final sessions
With two sessions done and two left to go, the Michigan Institute of Laundering & Drycleaning plans to resume its four-part management education series in April and May.
Both sessions will be held at the MILD office, located at 3225 W. St. Joseph in Lansing, MI. They will be taught by instructor Jan Barlow.
The MILD office previously hosted the first two sessions, which were held on Saturday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, March 15.
Session III is slated for Saturday, April 5, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It will outline legal regulations and ethical issues that drycleaners face, as well as advice on more effective human resources.
Topics to be covered include: employee handbooks and job descriptions; wages and incentives; employee retention; benefits; proper training and expectations for employees and different management structures.
The session will also examine employee safety and environmental issues.
About one month later, MILD will present the final segment of the series on Saturday, May 3, also from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Session IV will focus on sales and marketing, client and vendor services and diversification.
Attendees will learn about different types of media markets and will be introduced to some marketing and advertising plans.
Other topics on the agenda will be: advertising philosophy; customer surveys; budgeting; ad presentation; and analyzing effectiveness.
Each session costs $200 per person.

OCA sets scholarship deadline for June 30
The Ohio Cleaners Association will be awarding a $2,000 scholarship this year to the candidate they feel is most deserving.
OCA’s Scholarship Committee has decided upon a June 30 deadline for the program.
In order to be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be at least 18 years or older and have worked in the industry full time for at least three years for an OCA member in good standing.
Those applying must submit an application by June 30, accompanied by three member references and a 500-word essay explaining what the candidate hopes to accomplish in his or her lifetime.
Other requirements stipulate that the applicant must have completed high school or a G.E.D. and be currently employed by an OCA member.
The winner of the scholarship will be able to use it to pay tuition and book fees for a Drycleaning and Laundry Institute class.
Funds will be paid directly to DLI for tuition.

CLA sets conference for Chicago
The Coin Laundry Association will hold its 2008 Conference July 21-23 at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel in Chicago.
The conference will bring together laundry owners, potential investors, distributors and manufacturers to share their insights and skills in developing a successful laundry operation, improving customer relations and increasing revenue. In addition to excellent opportunities for networking, the association’s annual meeting will also take place at the conference.
A full day of sessions on Monday, July 21, will be devoted to investors researching the industry and will cover such topics as determining the right location and lease considerations. Sessions presented on Tuesday, July 22, and Wednesday, July 23, are designed for current laundry owners. A multi-store owner and distributor seminar are also scheduled.

Haiges plans two-day Expo at headquarters
Haiges Machinery Inc. will host Clean Expo ’08, featuring live equipment demonstrations, CEU classes, catered food and refreshments, factory representatives, equipment specials and door prizes on April 26-27.
The new Firbimatic Saver SM, which does not require steam or water, will be in operation and the new Feori by Firbimatic wetcleaning machine will also be unveiled with special tutorial classes.
There will be a live operating Sankosha shirt unit and Sankosha’s newest automatic bagging unit. Unipress will also be operating its latest shirt unit and finishing equipment.
Demonstrations of cleaning and spotting techniques will be presented by Ken Bull of the Laidlaw Corporation and Nick Gagliano of R.R. Streets & Co. Inc. Factory trained technicians will be on hand to demonstrate machine operation and maintenance procedures.
Admission is free. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at Haiges Machinery Inc, 11314 E. Main Street, Huntley, IL.
