SDA begins 2008 classes at school in Lubbock
Following its traditional format, the Southwest Drycleaners Association plans to offer three drycleaning courses beginning next month.
All three will be taught by instructor Jane Zellers at the International Textile Center located on the campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX.
The first offering will be held this summer from June 23-27. SDA will host a General Fabricare course worth nine DLI Award of Excellence points.
The program is ideally suited for newcomers to drycleaning, as well as those who have been in the industry for many years.
The one-week course will cover a variety of topics, including: basic customer service; fibers and fabrics; drycleaning technology; proper classification of garments for quality cleaning and reduced claims; and basic stain removal.
Students will also learn about wetcleaning procedures, dye stripping and finishing/pressing techniques for drycleaning, including tips on how to produce the “perfect shirt.”
Zellers will also emphasize the importance of workflow, proper equipment layout and its role in production.
The class will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
Tuition is $505 for SDA members and $530 for other DLI members. Non-members must pay $595 each to attend.
Later in the year, SDA will resume its educational schedule with two classes in November.
Both courses will last between two and three days and be worth five DLI Award of Excellence points.
The first offering will be on stain removal and will meet from Nov. 10-12. Class time will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Zellers will outline proper stain removal techniques, covering how dyes, pigments, prints and finishes are all integral components of cleaning.
She will also explore the proper use of stain removal tools and break down terms such as dryside, wetside, alkaline and acid.
The cost to attend is $335 for SDA members and $405 for other DLI members. Non-members must pay $470 each.
Those who complete that course will be qualified to pursue further studies on advanced stain removal. SDA will host a course on that topic from Nov. 12-14.
Students of the advanced course will meet from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, and 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
The course will focus on more advanced stain removal techniques that require a knowledge of fiber content, weaves, garment construction and how to test fiber content by burn testing.
There will be additional hands-on training with bleaches, digesters and KOH.
The cost is $325 for SDA members and $390 for other DLI members. Non-members pay $455 each.
All classes at the ITC have a minimum limit of ten students, with a maximum set at no more than 24. The instruction is divided up between a lecture format, class discussion, demonstrations, and hands-on practical application training.
