Guidance for consumers on gowns, tuxes
secrets.jpg
Boulder, CO — Steve Boorstein, aka The Clothing Doctor, has released a new book that covers bridal and tux care, christening outfits, party dresses, and bridesmaid dresses including guidance for shopping, altering, caring, cleaning and preservation.
The 44-page book includes cut-out diagrams for marking stains and repairs on bridal and christening gowns.
It explains that the dressmaker and seamstress have a personal stake in this process and is an artist and an integral part of the event, especially if the gown needs a lot of reworking. It also advises that whether a gown is preserved as a keepsake restyle or to hand down or intended for resale it to a secondhand store, it will need to be cleaned because a gown that sits uncleaned for weeks, months or years, may be of no use to anyone. The book advises that before the wedding a helper should be designated to take the gown in for cleaning and preservation.
Other books by Boorstein include The Clothing Doctor’s 99 Secrets to Cleaning and Clothing Care; The Clothing Doctor’s 99 Secrets to Drapery and Upholstery Care; and The Ultimate Guide to Shopping and Caring for Clothing.

Suede, leather wetcleaning
TULSA, OK —Royaltone’s Prosuede Wet detergent plus conditioner is formulated for safe and effective wetcleaning of suede, leather, cloth trimmed with suede and leather and all other cloth items including silks and color sensitive cloth items. It can be used with any laundry washer, small or large, manual or program. A DVD video on leather wetcleaning is also available to learn exactly how to wetclean and finish suede and leather.
Prosuede Wet is added to the wash cycle when wetcleaning leather, suede or trimmed items. Use two ounces per garment for leather or cloth garments trimmed with suede or leather or use one ounce per 10 pounds for cloth items.
The following procedure is for wetcleaning cloth and leather with Prosuede Wet:
After prespotting suedes and leathers, fill with warm water at 100°F or less. Prewash using Leather Fix Dye Fixer at four ounces per garment or 12 ounces per 10 pounds dry weight to fix the dyes of water sensitive items.
Add Prosuede Wet and load the washer at half the rated poundage capacity with dry suedes, leathers or  cloth trimmed with suede or leather.
Wash five to ten minutes; wash leathers three minutes maximum, then rinse in warm water at a temperature using Leather Soft at four ounces per suede or leather or 12 ounces per ten pounds dry weight to condition and soften the skins.
Extract at the normal washer setting to remove excess water, then tumble soft suedes for three minutes in a cool tumbler to shake out wrinkles.
Dry at a temperature of 100°F or less by hanging or tumbling, then finish when dry as usual for suede and leather.
Wetclean cloth with Prosuede Wet as follows:
After prespotting, load the washer to the rated poundage capacity with dry cloth items using warm water at a temperature of under 100°F for heat sensitive items like wool. Prewash with Leather Fix dye set for three minutes to set the dyes of water sensitive items. Use one ounce per ten pounds of cloth items.
Wash with Prosuede Wet to clean and retain color and texture. For cloth items use, one ounce per ten pounds. Wash on a five minute regular cycle, except for wool, wool blends, angora, cashmere, rayon and other sensitive dryclean only fabrics which should be washed on a gentle cycle to minimize mechanical action, felting and shrinkage.
Rinse then extract on the normal washer setting to remove excess water. Dry cloth on normal setting, except wool, wool blends, cashmere, angora, rayon and heat sensitive “dryclean only” fabrics which should be dried on a short delicate cycle to minimize mechanical action and eliminate shrinkage, distortion and felting. Control drying to retain a 10 percent residual garment humidity level or hang to air dry at room temperature and humidity. Press, iron and form finish cloth as usual.
These procedure are described in detail in Royaltone’s Wet Cleaning book, audio tape and the DVD video on wetcleaning suedes, leathers, trims and cloth.
