NCA continues webinars, classes at New York School
Whether cleaners find themselves in the classroom or on a personal computer, the National Cleaners Association aims to give them all the knowledge they need  to be successful.
For those who find themselves too busy to trek over to the association’s school in New York, there are numerous convenient webinars lined up in the coming months.
All webinars start at 6 p.m. EST on designated Wednesdays. The cost is $69 for telephone and Web-based participation.
Upcoming topics include: “Wetcleaning: Beyond 40%” by Ann Hargrove on Aug. 20; “Employee Orientation” by Jason Loeb on Sept. 17; “Innovative Packaging” on Oct. 15; and “Finishing with Tensioning Equipment” by Kathy Childers on Nov. 19.
Cleaners who miss a webinar can still order a CD-rom copy of it from NCA’s web site. Over 40 webinars from the previous three years are listed. The cost for each CD is $69 plus $7 shipping and handling.
For more information, contact NCA at (800) 888-1622.
Of course, NCA has several courses on the itinerary for its school at 252 W. 29th St. for cleaners who prefer a more traditional “hands-on” approach.
Starting on Aug. 4, the association will host a 40-hour “Radical Drycleaning/Stain Removal” course that meets from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tuition is $750 for members and $995 for non-members.
Those interested in taking a comprehensive ten-week course that covers the “Principles and Practices of Drycleaning” will have the chance on Sept. 8.
The class will meet from 7 to 11 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday until Nov. 24.
The curriculum will cover virtually everything you need to know in order to become a master cleaner, from the chemistry of stain removal to garment construction, fiber identification and machinery operation and maintenance.
In addition to classroom sessions, sample fabric swatches are treated with a wide variety of stains and students are given numerous opportunities to practice and develop proper stain removal techniques and skills.
An additional offering of the class in Korean will run from 7 to 11 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays between Sept. 16 and Nov. 20.
Both classes cost $970 for members and $1,170 for non-members.
Some cleaners may prefer courses that focus on more specific topics, such as “Intensive Bleaching,” an eight-hour class that will take place on Sunday, Sept. 21.
Other one-day offerings include: “Wetcleaning” on Sunday, Nov. 2; “Hand Finishing — The Lost Art” on Sunday, Nov. 9; and “Technical Training at the Counter for Customer Service Reps” on Sunday, Dec. 7.
All four one-day courses will meet from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. and cost $250 for members and $275 for non-members.
Rounding out the list of upcoming New York School of Drycleaning courses is a three-day program on “Basic Finishing and Pressing.”
The class will meet from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., Oct. 3-5, for a total of 24 hours.
The cost is $455 for members and $595 for non-members.
