NCA closes out 2008 with several classes at NY school
The last three months of the year will prove to be busy ones at the National Cleaners Association’s New York School of Dry Cleaning.
Located at 254 W. 29th St in New York City’s Fashion District, the school is an ideal place for drycleaners of all skill sets to hone their skills and sharpen their knowledge.
Kicking things off will be a three-day course on “Basic Pressing and Finishing” from Oct. 3-5. It will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for a total of 24 class hours. The cost to attend is $455 for NCA members and $595 for non-members.
Next up is an opportunity for Korean cleaners to update their DEC certification.
The two-day, 16-hour course will meet on consecutive Sundays, Oct. 5 and 12, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
The class, which will be taught in Korean, costs $595 for member cleaners and $1,095 for non-member cleaners.
NCA will offer a specialized training course covering the topic of “wetcleaning” on Sunday, Nov. 2. The class will run from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Members pay $250 for tuition; non-members pay $275 each.
Another one-day course is scheduled one week later on Nov. 9. It will cover “Hand Finishing — The Lost Art.” It will also run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and cost $250 for members and $275 for non-members.
Those seeking a more in-depth, comprehensive course may want to mark Nov. 11 on their calendars. That is the start date for NCA’s ten-week, 80-hour signature course on the “Principles and Practices of Drycleaning.”
Those who attend will learn everything they need to know to become a master cleaner, from the chemistry of stain removal to garment construction, fiber identification and machinery operation and maintenance.
The class will meet every Monday and Wednesday from 7 to 11 p.m between the start date and Jan. 4, 2009. Tuition is $970 per student.
Rounding out this year’s classes for NCA’s New York School of Dry Cleaning will be an offering on Sunday, Dec. 7 covering “Technical Training at the Counter for Customer Service Reps.”
The one-day course will start at 8:30 a.m. and run until 5 p.m. Members who attend must pay $250 each. Non-members must pay $275.
Not all of NCA’s educational sessions require cleaners to make the trip to New York City. The association also will be hosting several upcoming webinars that are both cost-effective and convenient for attendees.
The association’s webinars meet on designated Wednesdays at 6 p.m. EST. The cost is $69 for telephone and Web-based participation. That price includes an audio tape of the seminar for everyone and PowerPoint files for Web-based participants.
Upcoming sessions include one on “Innovative Packaging” on Oct. 15, as well as one on “Finishing w/Tensioning Equipment” by Kathy Childers on Nov. 19.
Cleaners may also purchase webinars on CD for $69 plus $7 shipping and handling.
At the present time, NCA has approximately 50 webinars for sale dating back to 2005. A full list of topics and speakers can be found on the association’s web site at www.nca-i.com.
