Zellers leads basic, advanced stain removal in Lubbock
This November, the Southwest Drycleaners Association will host two stain removal courses at the Fiber & Biopolymer Research Institute of Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
Instructor Jane Zellers will bring her expertise to the classroom, starting with a beginner’s stain removal course from Nov. 10-12, followed by an advanced class from Nov. 12-14.
Both sessions are worth five Award of Excellence points for attendees.
Zellers is widely known as a consultant and a lecturer. She hails from a three-generation drycleaning family and has acquired considerable experience in customer service, knowledge of fabrics and stain removal.
That experience will come to light during the basic stain removal course. It is scheduled to meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Zellers will focus on proper stain removal techniques, with an emphasis on factors such as dyes, pigments and prints.
Those who attend will learn the proper use of stain removal tools and will be able to recognize terms such as wetside, dryside, alkaline and acid.
Class time will be divided between a lecture format, demonstrations and hands-on experience.
Those who finish the course successfully will be prepared to move on the advanced course.
The advanced course will meet from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, and 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
The two-day course will employ more advanced stain removal techniques for experienced drycleaners.
Attendees will gain a better understanding of fiber content, weaves, garment construction and how to test fiber content by burn testing.
There will also be hands-on training involving bleaches, digesters and KOH.
Both courses must have a minimum of ten students and a maximum of 24. Students are encouraged to bring their own problem garments to be worked on during class time.
The cost is $335 for SDA members for the basic course. Other DLI members must pay $405 each. Tuition for non-members is $470.
The cost of the advanced course is: $325 for SDA members and $390 for other DLI members. Non-members must pay $455 each.
For those planning to attend the classes at Texas Tech University can procure lodging at the nearby Ashmore Inn & Suites.
SDA has secured a room rate of $71 per night plus tax for up to four people. Room reservations must be made by Oct. 26.
Incidentally, that date is also the deadline for students who wish to apply for SDA’s Herrington-Parker-Worthington-Assunto Scholarship Fund to help pay for the courses.
Candidates must be at least 19 years of age; have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.; have at least one year experience in the industry; and be an owner or employee of a company that is an SDA member.
