SDA offers final round of stain removal classes
Whether you are a stain removal rookie, or an old veteran spotter, chances are there are a few skills that you could use brushing up on.
Fortunately, the Southwest Drycleaners Association can help rectify such a situation with two upcoming courses slated for November.
Both will be held at the Fiber & Biopolymer Research Institute of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX.
Popular instructor Jane Zellers will bring her expertise to the classroom, starting with a beginner’s stain removal course from Nov. 10-12, followed by an advanced class from Nov. 12-14.
Zellers is a third generation cleaner with a lifetime of industry knowledge, especially in topics such as customer service and fabrics, as well as the removal of stains.
Both classes at the Fiber & Polymer Research Institute are worth five Award of Excellence points for attendees.
Class time will be divided between a lecture format, visual demonstrations and hands-on experience.
The basic stain removal course will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Zellers will emphasize proper stain removal techniques, focussing on factors such as dyes, pigments and prints.
Attendees will also study the proper use of stain removal tools and will be able to identify terms such as wetside, dryside, alkaline and acid.
Those who finish the course successfully will be prepared to move on to further studies with the advanced course, which immediately follows the basic one.
It will meet from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, and 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
The two-day course will offer more advanced stain removal techniques for drycleaners with more experience.
Those who attend will gain a better understanding of fiber content, weaves, garment construction and how to test fiber content by burn testing.
There will also be hands-on training involving bleaches, digesters and KOH.
Both courses must have a minimum of ten students and a maximum of 24.
Students are encouraged to bring their own problem garments to be worked on during class time.
The cost is $335 for SDA members for the basic course. Other DLI members must pay $405 each. Tuition for non-members is $470.
The cost of the advanced course is: $325 for SDA members and $390 for other DLI members. Non-members must pay $455 each.
Seminar prices include a box lunch for each student for each full day of class.
Those attending the classes at Texas Tech University can inquire about hotel accommodations at the nearby Ashmore Inn & Suites, located at 4019 S. Loop 289.
The hotel offers wireless high speed Internet, an outdoor heated pool, free cable with HBO and a fitness facility. The phone number is (806) 785-0060.
