During its recent Fabricare convention in Long Beach, the California Cleaners Association took time to honor three of its members for showing extraordinary commitment to forwarding both the association and the drycleaning industry.
Lynnette Watterson was awarded the prestigious Dry Cleaner of the Year award. She is the owner and operator of Crystal Cleaning Center in San Mateo, which recently celebrated its 45th anniversary.
The number “45” is a bit of a magic number for Watterson, who has spent that many years involved in the drycleaning industry, as well.
Currently, she volunteers her time to CCA chairing the Membership Committee and serving as the Division 3 director.
Throughout her career, she has held numerous positions with CCA, including division director, Membership Committee and Public Relations Committee member, treasurer, 1st vice president and 2nd vice president.
She also served as the association’s president from 2004 to 2006.
In addition to being a CCA/DLI member, she also acts as the regional vice president for the International Drycleaners Congress.
She is also a member of the San Mateo Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Business.
CCA next presented this year’s Allied Trades Person of the Year, which was given to Jackie Smith of Henderson Insurance. She has been actively involved with the association since 1989.
Smith is now the allied trades representative for the CCA Board. She has helped out in various other capacities, such as: division director, treasurer, vice president and president from 1999 to 2001.
Smith remains active in the industry by writing a monthly article for Western Cleaner and Launderer.
She also holds the position of vice president and secretary for the Southern California Cleaners Association (formerly known as GLADCA), an organization she has been affiliated with since 1978.
She has served continuously on the board during that time.
She currently is active on the board of directors for the California Small Business Alliance, as well.
Rounding out the annual awards was a final one for Robert Blackburn of Blackburn’s Training and Consulting who received CCA’s President’s Award for his countless hours of time dedicated to the association and the drycleaning industry.
Blackburn’s father, Bob, was also honored lately when the family business, Town and Country Cleaners, was granted 5-Star status for the Star Recognition Program.
The program is based on a star-ranking system that measures quality performance and customers service. Five stars is the highest distinction. In order to qualify for that level, a cleaning plant must meet specific operational standards and demonstrate a strong commitment to improving local communities.
Bob Blackburn has spent 57 years in the drycleaning industry. He has also spent numerous years teaching the drycleaning trade to inmates of various California prisons. He is a past president of CCA, too.
