SEFA ushers in 2009 with trio of seminars in FL, SC
The South Eastern Fabricare Association plans to keep cleaners busy during the early part of the new year. Already, the association has planned three educational seminars in that time; two will be held in Florida and one in South Carolina.
First up will be a program on Saturday, January 24, by Sandy Seay of Seay Management, a full service human resources management firm stationed in Orlando.
The session will be called “Danger! Card Check! How You Could Have a Union and Not Know It!” It will take place from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at the Sheraton Safari in Lake Buena Vista, FL.
The cost to attend is $49.95 for SEFA members and $79.95 for non-members. Lunch is included in the class fees.
In the following month, SEFA will enlist James Peuster, The Route Pro and a regular columnist for National Clothesline, to discuss the topic of “Changing Your Mindset in These Changing Times.”
The seminar will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21. The price and location will be announced in the near future.
Finally, SEFA has asked industry expert Jane Zellers to speak at Ed Robinson Laundry and Drycleaners in Columbia, SC, on the weekend of March 21 and 22.
The topic will be “Handling Specialty Items... Vintage and Current.” Zellers will instruct from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days.
The cost to attend is $199 for members and $260 for non-members. Lunch is included in the class fees.
For more information or to register, call the SEFA office at (877) 707-7332 or e-mail Lynn Daley at lynn@sefa.org.

GA cleaners can submit NOCS forms
Even though the deadline has passed, perc drycleaners in Georgia will still be allowed submit their Notification of Compliance Status (NOCS) forms.
Federal regulations adopted for the state call for all perc cleaners to comply with operational, monitoring, record-keeping and reporting requirements.
The NOCS forms, which are used to demonstrate compliance with federal air emissions for perc drycleaners, were originally slated to be filled out and turned in to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and US EPA Region 4 by July 28, 2008.
However, according to Rachel Cochran, public affairs coordinator for the Georgia Small Business Environmental Assistance Program, cleaners can still turn them in at this time.
“By doing what is required, this will help reduce your liability for possible future enforcement actions,” she wrote in the November issue of the South Eastern Fabricare Association’s newsletter The Reclaimer.
In addition to the NOCS form, perc cleaners in the state are required to submit an Initial Notification form to state and federal agencies. Such forms must be filled within 30 days of starting up a business.
For questions concerning drycleaner compliance requirements, cleaners should contact Arthur Stelson, Georgia EPD Air Protection Branch, at (404) 463-7116, or the Georgia Small Business Environmental Assistance Program at (404) 362-4842.
