PA aids small businesses with grants of $454,000
More than $454,000 in grants were awarded to 81 Pennsylvania businesses to be invested in equipment that will increase energy efficiency and help prevent pollution.
Of those, nine businesses from the drycleaning and laundry industry received over $64,000 altogether.
The grants, made available through the state’s Small Business Advantage Program, are designed to help small businesses become more profitable in the long-term.
“Pennsylvania is investing in its future by supporting businesses that purchase energy-efficient equipment to drive down their energy consumption and generate clean energy that meets their demands and yields excess power that can be sold back to the grid,” said acting Environmental Protection Secretary John Hanger.
“By reducing energy consumption, we conserve our natural resources, reduce our dependence on imported fossil fuels, and prevent pollution,” he added. “Investing in energy efficiency is investing in a clean and prosperous future.”
Those in the cleaning industry seeking to invest in the future included the following businesses: Quick Clean of Erie County who received $5,500 for seven high efficiency washers to conserve energy, water and generation of wastewater; Coin Laundry Express of Lackawanna County who received $7,500 for high-efficiency laundry equipment to reduce water use and wastewater generation; Ephrata Self-Serve Laundry of Lancaster County who was awarded $7,427 for high-efficiency laundry equipment; and KSL Enterprice Bond Cleaners of Montgomery County who received $7,500 for a hydrocarbon-based dry-cleaning unit and a water-based washing unit.
Two companies from Luzerne County participated in the program. Miners Mills Laundromat - will use its $7,500 for high-efficiency laundry equipment to reduce water use and wastewater generation and Bennett St. Laundromat plans to utilize its $7,500 for high-efficiency laundry equipment to reduce water use and wastewater generation.
Rounding out the list is Fidelity Cleaners Inc. of Philadelphia County that received $7,500 for a high-efficiency boiler; Montrose Dry Cleaners of Susquehanna County who received $6,750 for a high-efficiency boiler with zone controls; and Lincoln Coin Laundry of Westmoreland County who was awarded $7,275 for high-efficiency washing machines.
“In these difficult financial times, it is easy for businesses to focus only on the short term,” noted Governor Rendell. “Pennsylvania is committed to helping small businesses that are wisely investing in their long-term competitiveness.”
“Energy prices are lower today because the global economic downturn has reduced demand,” he added. “However, we can expect the economic cycle to eventually return to growth at home and in China, India and other developing countries.”
Overall, Pennsylvania has about 262,000 small businesses that are responsible for employing nearly 2 million people and paying out more than $19 billion in wages each quarter.
Since Gov. Rendell launched the Small Business Advantage Program in 2004, it has helped invest approximately $4.9 million in 928 businesses in the state.
The program provides a 50 percent match of up to $7,500 for equipment or processes that reduce energy use, promote pollution prevention and increase profitability. For more information, visit www.depweb.state.pa.us.
