Cleaners’ condition is MCA’s topic
Nobody needs to be told about the current state of the national economy, but cleaners should certainly be concerned with the status of their own business in these troubled times.
With that in mind, the Minnesota Cleaners Association will ask cleaners “What condition is your condition in?” at its annual convention March 13 and 14 at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino.
MCA will kick off the weekend with a board of directors meeting from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Friday.
Later in the evening, the association will host a cocktail reception with hors d’oeuvres from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Cleaners will have the evening free to enjoy many of the area’s leisurely pursuits, including bowling, bingo, gaming and slots, as well as a variety of family and live entertainment.
On Saturday morning, MCA will officially welcome attendees during a brief ceremony at 9:35 a.m. before offering a full day of educational sessions.
The first will begin at 9:45 a.m. and will examine the topic of “Insulation, Steam Traps and Your Energy Bills.”
Next up is a seminar entitled “Hazardous Waste Transport: Need to Know” that runs from 10:20 to 10:50 a.m.
After a short break, the educational sessions will resume with “Financing or Selling a Small Business Today” at 11:10 a.m. followed by “Tenant Strategies for Commercial Renters” from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
During an hour-long lunch break, attendees can enjoy a buffet lunch and a clothing trunk show before heading back for more sessions.
In the afternoon, MCA will present “How to Grow Your Business in a Tight Market” at 1:25 p.m.
The day’s programming will conclude at 2:30 p.m. with an interactive speaker panel Q&A session.
Registration for the event costs $75 per person for those attending the Friday night cocktail reception only.
Those who wish to attend Saturday’s educational programs must pay $110 each for members and $50 for member spouses.
Non-members must pay $200 for the Saturday programs; however, those who sign up for MCA membership during the convention will receive a $190 credit afterward.
Registration payments must be received in full prior to March 13. Since space is limited, early registration is recommended.
The same principle applies to those who plan to secure logging at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino.
MCA hotel space availability is limited, so attendees should make reservations by calling (800) 222-7077 as early as possible.
Convention registration forms are available in the current issue of MCA’s newsletter, Spotlight, as well as on the association’s web site at www.minnesotadrycleaners.org.
Information can also be obtained by calling MCA’s office, (952) 979-3385.

Newly merged association plans spotting seminar
The Indiana Drycleaning and Laundry Association has merged with the Kentucky Fabricare association to form a new group called the Mid West Drycleaners & Laundry Association (MWDLA).
Rick Armstrong, who is currently the DLI District 4 Director, will serve as the executive director for the combined association.
As one of its first orders of business, MWDLA will be co-sponsoring a spotting seminar with R.R. Street. The event will take place on Saturday, March 7 at Classic Cleaners in Indianapolis, IN.
Streets will provide the spotting agents, bottles and tools, as well as four instructors: Ken Jones, Roger Stevenson, Nick Gagliano and Jim Groshans.
The seminar will start at 9 a.m. with an open presentation on the use of spotting tools and agents and stain identification. Afterward, there will be a two-hour session of hands-on spotting in a plant environment.
Both advanced and beginning techniques will be covered during that time.
After lunch, there will be a 90-minute discussion of techniques for wetcleaning, bleaching and digestion, as well as additional spotting board work if there is enough time.
Registration costs $50 for MWDLA members and $80 for non-members.
Any non-member who joins MWDLA at the seminar will be able to attend at no charge.
