Drycleaning classes at DLI next month
The year is nearly half over, but there are still opportunities to brush up or
learn new drycleaning skills at the Drycleaning Laundry Institute’s training facility in Laurel, MD.
With classes accredited through the Maryland Higher Education Commission, the
school offers newcomers and veterans alike a chance to advance their
drycleaning education.
Students learn the skills in a classroom atmosphere before applying the
knowledge practically by gaining access to the school’s vast array of tools and machinery, which includes conventional and tensioning
finishing equipment, hot and cold stain removal boards, and a variety of
different wetcleaning machines.
The school will next host a one-week “Introduction to Drycleaning” course beginning July 24 that is ideally suited for those with less than one
year of experience in the industry. The final class session will begin Oct. 19.
Those who attend will learn about a variety of subjects, including: fibers and
fabrics; work flow; principles of the drycleaning process; assembly and
invoicing; the drycleaning machine; cleaning and drying cycles; elementary
stain removal; and finishing procedures for pants, coats and skirts.
Tuition is $795 for DLI members and $1,149 for non-members.
Cleaners with more than one year of production experience may want to consider
improving their skills with DLI’s Advanced Drycleaning course.
The two-week class delves deeper into the drycleaning process, focussing on:
specialty fibers and fabric identification; advanced stain removal procedures
and bleaches; finishing blouses, dresses, ties, all-weather coats, pleats, pile
fabrics, silks and rayons; wetcleaning; and solvents, detergents, moisture,
filtration and distillation for perchloroethylene and petroleum systems.
Those who attend will also learn about how to troubleshoot the drycleaning
system, regulations and care labels, plant layout, customer service and
business management.
The course will meet July 27 to Aug. 7 and Oct. 26 to Nov. 6.
The cost to attend is $1,249 for association members and $1,749 for non-members.
Rounding out this year’s schedule for DLI will be a one-week course on “Cleaning and Stain Removal” that will meet from Sept. 14 to 18.
Instruction for the course will emphasize the practical application of stain
removal and cleaning procedures.
Individual topics include: load classification; principles of drycleaning;
solvents used in drycleaning; detergents and moisture; filtration and
distillation; drying and vapor recovery; troubleshooting the drycleaning
machine; fibers and fabrics; bleaches; stain removal tools and equipment; and
stain removal agents and procedures.
Tuition for the course is $795 for members and $1,149 for non-members.
