It’s back to school time for drycleaners at DLI, too
It’s back-to-school time and not just for kids and young adults. The Drycleaning and Laundry Institute has several fall offerings at its School of Drycleaning Technology in Laurel, MD.
A Cleaning and Stain Removal course is slated for the week of Sept. 14-18. The one-week course covers fibers and fabrics; principle of drycleaning; load classification; solvents used in drycleaning; detergents and moisture; filtration and distillation; drying and vapor recovery; troubleshooting drycleaning machines; stain removal tools and equipment; stain removal agents and procedures; and bleaches.
Tuition for the class is $795 for members and $1,149 for non-members.
In October, DLI will offer both an Introduction to Drycleaning and an Advanced Drycleaning course.
The introductory course, optimum for individuals who are new to the drycleaning industry or have less than one year of experience, runs Oct. 20-24. The cost is $795 for members and $1,149 for non-members.
Students who complete the introductory course, or cleaners who have more than one year of production experience, will be ready to take DLI’s Advanced Drycleaning class Oct. 26 through Nov. 6.
This course offers advanced cleaning topics, including: speciality fabrics and fiber identification; advanced stain removal procedures and bleaches; finishing blouses, dresses, ties. all-weather coats, pleats, pile fabrics, silks and rayon; wetcleaning; and solvents, detergents, moisture, filtration and distillation for perchloroethylene and petroleum systems.
Tuition for the two-week advanced class is $1,249 for members and $1,749 for non-members.
For buyers and sellers
Also on the horizon are two web-based seminars featuring Richard Ehrenreich, executive director for the Mid-Atlantic Association of Cleaners.
On Wednesday, Sept. 23, he will discuss the topic of “Acquiring a Drycleaning Business.” The following month, he will discuss “Selling and Getting Out of Drycleaning” on Wednesday, Oct. 14.

CPDA hosts Carl Gardner golf tourney
The Central Pennsylvania Dry Cleaners Association will sponsor its annual Carl Gardner Golf Benefit for the Special Olympics on Thursday, Sept. 17 at the Briarwood Golf Club in York, PA.
All proceeds will benefit the York County Special Olympics.
The tournament was started 18 years ago by Carl Gardner as an outlet for cleaners to join together and support a valuable cause while enjoying a relaxing day. Following his death in 2006, the event was renamed to commemorate his work for the association and the Special Olympics.
The entry fee for the tournament is $85 per person or $340 per team. The cost includes 18 holes of golf, free range balls, lunch, dinner and beer and soda.
