EPA orders cleaner to shut down transfer unit
The Environmental Protection Agency has ordered a Minnesota cleaner to stop
using a transfer machine in its drycleaning operation.
The administrative consent order was issued to bring Pfeffer's Cleaners in White
Bear Lake, MN, into compliance with the Clean Air Act.
EPA outlawed the use of transfer equipment in perc drycleaning when it issued
amendments to its clean-air rules for drycleaners in 2006. Under those rules,
EPA directed that all existing transfer operations, believed to number about
200 at that time, had to be replaced with fourth-generation equipment by July
2008.
EPA said it learned of the alleged violation from local health authorities and
from the company's response to an EPA information request. The agency said it
notified Pfeffer's Cleaners in January that it believed the company was in
violation of the rule. In February, EPA and company representatives discussed
the alleged violation.
Douglas Pfeffer, owner of Pfeffer’s Cleaners, told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that he had shut down the transfer
unit for good earlier this year, but EPA wants him to “dismantle and permanently remove” the machine by Sept. 1, then submit proof to EPA that the machine has been
turned into scrap by Oct. 1.
WFI heads to Wisconsin Dells for fall conference this Sept.
The Wisconsin Fabricare Institute has planned this year’s Fall Conference and Golf Outing to be a fun event for the whole family.
The conference will take place from Sept. 11 to 13 at the Chula Vista Resort,
which is located in Wisconsin Dells, WI.
The Chula Vista Resort offers something for everybody, including an indoor
waterpark that features 80,000 square feet of waterslides, the highlight of
which is the whirling dervish Cyclone. The extreme ride is 48 feet tall and 268
feet long, making it the tallest waterslide in all of North America.
The area offers plenty of other activities, as well, such as fine dining,
shopping, a Spa del Sol and golf at the 18-hole Coldwater Golf Course located on the resort’s property.
Attendees who wish to participate in the golf outing must pay the $55
registration fee which includes the cost of 18 holes, cart and lunch.
The golf outing will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The educational portion of the conference will kick off earlier on Saturday
morning at 9 a.m. with a brief program on “History of Chula Vista — Growth & Improvements” by Mike Kaminski, president and CEO of the Chula Vista Resort.
Following that will be a 45-minute presentation by Scott Manley of Wisconsin
Manufacturers & Commerce.
He will discuss “Where is Wisconsin’s Economy Heading?” from 9:15 to 10 a.m.
Later in the day, Daryl Ohland will pose the question: “Are You Missing Out on a Sales Tax Exemption?” at 10:15 a.m. Ohland hails from WIPFLi, a CPA and consulting firm that has
grown to include over 800 employees since its inception in 1930.
Two more programs will take place on Sunday morning, including one on “Reading the Care Label — How to Avoid Problems” by Ken Bull, sales representative for Adco/Laidlaw Cleaning Products.
The program will take place from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m.
At 10:30 a.m., Brian Parrish of The Dickman Co., Inc, CORFAC International will
take the podium for an hour-long session on “Mastering the Real Estate Market.”
Also during the weekend, WFI will host a board of directors meeting at 5 p.m. on
Friday evening and a general membership meeting at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.
The association will also host dinner hospitalities with cash bars during the
first two evenings of the conference and a full breakfast buffet on Saturday
morning.
Registration packages for WFI’s Fall Conference can be broken down by individual events or attendees can
choose to purchase a full package that costs $150 for members and $125 for
spouses if purchased prior to the Early Bird deadline of Sept. 2.
After that date, the pre-registration rates go up $25.
The full package includes admission to all events except for the golf outing.
For room reservations, contact the Chula Vista Resort by calling (800) 388-4782.
WFI is seeking sponsors for the hospitality suites and door prizes at the
conference. Sponsors can choose Gold Level at $200 or Silver Level at $100.
They will be recognized during the Saturday evening dinner, in the conference
program on a projected image between business sessions and in Impressions, the
association’s publication.
