Sacramento utility offering rebates for wetcleaning
In an effort to distance more drycleaners from using perc, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) is offering rebates of up to $4,200 to those who  convert from the solvent to professional wetcleaning equipment.
To be eligible for the rebate, an applicant must have a perc drycleaning facility located in Sacramento County, CA, and also have an active SMUD electric account at that location.
For applicants who own more than one cleaning facility, a separate application must be filled out for each conversion. There is a cap of one application per facility.
According to SMUD, wecleaning uses less energy than other alternative systems, so the grants are only available for wetcleaning systems.
The new system must meet all required local, state and federal codes to be eligible. Applicable products and vendors must be pre-qualified for the program.
In addition to the SMUD grants, monetary grants are also available through the state’s Air Resources Board to California cleaners making the switch from perc.
CARB provides $10,000 grants to eligible drycleaners in the state to transition from the perc to alternative non-toxic and non-smog forming technologies such as water-based and CO2 cleaning systems.
Information about the SMUD wetcleaning program may be found at www.smud.org/wetcleaning. Rebate information is also available by calling (877) 622-7683.
Information on the statewide CARB program is available at www.arb.ca.gov/toxics/dryclean/ab998.htm.
