Nu Yale wins ‘greening’ award from Louisville
Nu Yale Cleaners of Indiana and Kentucky was recognized in September for its
environmental efforts with a Greening/Sustainability Award presented by the
Louisville Chamber of Commerce organization Greater Louisville Inc. (GLI).
The annual awards event honors local small businesses for their achievements in
different categories. It draws an attendance of over 500 annually.
Nu Yale was singled out as the best in the Greening/Sustainability category.
In order to qualify for the Greening/Sustainability award, a company must have
green products or purpose or have extensive green practices.
Criteria for the honor include: written policies, goals and metrics for green
practices; provision or use of alternative energy and/or energy efficient
products or services; or produce or manufacture a green product or service.
There were no shortage of reasons why the panel of judges opted to give the
award to Nu Yale, which was started around 54 years ago as a coin laundry
establishment.
“Nu Yale is a large diversified drycleaning and textile restoration company that
has been family owned since 1956,” noted a press release issued from the GLI Awards Program. “It is the only drycleaner in Kentuckiana to earn the 5-Star designation for
environmentally-friendly cleaning practices that go above and beyond
regulations.”
One aspect of the business that caught the award committee’s eye is that Nu Yale incorporates the Solvair drycleaning process, which uses a
biodegradable cleaning liquid that has a history of use in a wide range of
everyday products. Solvair uses liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) for drying without
heat.
Of course, representatives of the program added other reasons for the selection.
“Nu Yale is also currently redesigning their hanger caddies to encourage the
recycling of hangers, sweater bags and poly material and incorporating green
construction ideas into the improvement plan for their recently purchased
50,000 square foot main facility,” they added.
The award from the GLI Awards Program was just one of many that Nu Yale has
received in recent years from both the local and state levels.
Last year, the company received a 2009 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.
The award was presented to plant owner Gary Maloney from a representative from
the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
Maloney had decided to switch out a perc machine for a new Solvair machine in
2008.
The change helped the company reduce hazardous waste by over 2,000 pounds per
year and waste water by 3,465 pounds per year.
In addition to the Governor’s Award, Nu Yale was also a finalist for One Southern Indiana’s 2010 Business of the Year Award (in the 25 or more employees category) and was
also recognized by the Women’s Junior League of Louisville as its Community Partner of the Year for 2010.
The company has been affiliated with America’s Best Cleaners since 2006 and has been certified as an Indiana 5-Star
Environmental Cleaner from April of 1997 to the present.
