Five Star Cleaners helps food bank in feeding the hungry
Five Star Cleaners recently pledged to help the San Antonio Food Bank with its third annual Five for 5 food drive.
The help couldn’t come at a better time.
The summer months prove to be the busiest for the organization because many children who receive food through free national and reduced meal programs at school no longer have that option for assistance.
As a result, the food bank must distribute more than 3,800 meals per day to children at 127 feeding sites. Fortunately, they will have more help this year.
The owners of Five Star Cleaners — Richard Thum, Sharlene Thum and Bryan Newbold — are urging their customers and local residents to donate food during the food collection campaign that runs from July 8 through August 12.
“Texas recorded six of the 10 counties in the country with the highest rate of childhood food insecurity in 2011, according to Feed America,” noted Sharlene Thum, vice president and co-founder of the company. “Never in my wildest dreams would I put the word ‘insecurity’ with the word ‘food.’ Childhood hunger should not happen in America, and this is why Five Star Cleaners is eager to kick off this year’s Five for 5 food drive.”
As part of the effort, Five Star Cleaners will hand out a $5 off coupon on future drycleaning orders for anybody who brings in five cans of food to any of its 18 locations.
Thum also noted that donors will have a convenient opportunity to support Five for 5 by making a direct financial donation to the San Antonio Food Bank. It will be available via a special QR code that will be printed on all coupons, drycleaning bags and in-store signage that offers an option to make a payment through PayPal .
Eric Cooper, president and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank, was also excited by the prospect of teaming up to step up in the fight against childhood hunger.
“Being able to leverage a relationship with a business partner in the community that helps feed children is a great benefit to all,” he said. “We appreciate Five Star Cleaners stepping up and creating a robust and creative summer food drive to help us in our mission to feed children while helping customers maximize their dollars.”

SDA making plans for ’14 trade show
Next year, the Southwest Drycleaners Association will be returning its Cleaners Showcase drycleaning convention to Fort Worth.
Last year, the show was held from March 30 to April 1 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio. However, in 2014 it will be held once again at the Fort Worth Convention Center at 1201 Houston St.
Show dates will be from April 25 to 27.
Right now, SDA has opened up Early Bird registration for vendors. The cost for a 10' x 10'booth will be $740 if paid in full prior to Sept. 30; after that date, the cost goes up to $860 per space.
