DLI announces 2014 dates for educational courses
School will be back in session for the Drycleaning and Laundry Institute in 2014 with a lineup of courses  on drycleaning, wetcleaning and stain removal.
The institute’s School of Drycleaning Technology awarded more than 100 diplomas in 2013 and hopes to continue the trend starting in February when it hosts the first installment of its one-week introductory course.
The class, which is geared toward individuals who are new to the industry or with less than one year of experience, will meet between Feb. 24 to 28.
Among the topics covered in the course are: sorting loads for drycleaning; cleaning silk, satin and other fabrics; operating a drycleaning machine; removing coffee, ink, grease and other stains from clothing; pressing pants, coats and skirts; and using tensioning equipment to improve finishing quality.
The cost is $795 for DLI members, or $695 for two or more from the same member plant. Non-members must pay $1,149 each. For Premier Club members, one tuition is free.
The class will meet an additional two times during the year on the dates of July 14 to 18 and Oct. 13 to 17.
Those who successfully complete the introductory course may want to consider DLI’s two week advanced drycleaning offering, suited for individuals who possess hands-on production experience and knowledge of basic stain removal and finishing techniques.
Advanced topics include: identifying cotton, silk, polyester and other fabrics; using bleaches without damaging the fabric color; wetcleaning wool, silk and more; maintaining and changing filters; troubleshooting problems with the drycleaning machine; current regulations facing the industry; customer service techniques; understanding the difference between solvents, including perc, GreenEarth and hydrocarbon; and much more.
DLI will offer the class on three separate dates: March 3 to 14, July 21 to Aug. 1, and Oct. 20 to 31.
Tuition is $1,249 for DLI members or $1,049 each for two or more from the same member plant. Non-members pay $1,749.
Also during the year, DLI will return with installments of its wetcleaning and stain removal courses.
The three-day stain removal course will meet from April 30 to May 2 and focus on the practical application of various stain removal procedures, including using specialty products such as digesters, amyl acetate and acetone and removing spotting rings and water marks.
The cost to attend is $449 for DLI members, but the cost is reduced to $349 each for two or more members from the same plant. Non-members must pay $549 each. Premier Club Members may enjoy one free tuition.
The two-day wetcleaning course, which will take place from Sept. 11 to 12, will offer hands-on training for the wetcleaning process, from sorting loads for cleaning to operating wetcleaning machines and dryers to identifying fibers and fabric construction.
Also during the class, students will learn how water affects various fabrics; stain removal techniques for wetcleaning; finishing procedures for wetcleaned items; wetcleaning beaded, sequined and other specialty items; and wetcleaning wool, silk, satin and more.
The cost for the two-day course is $349 for DLI members ($249 for two or more from the same member plant) and $449 for non-members. Premier Club members can enjoy a free tuition.
