2nd generation takes helm at TCATA
The Textile Care Allied Trades Association 2014 conference received high marks from attendees
including two long-time members who said it was the best conference ever.
Held at the Ritz Carlton Resort in Naples, FL, April 30 through May 3, the conference followed its
theme of “Taking Charge of Change” with a business program with three speakers who offered
valuable “take-home” information on topics ranging from social media, sales principles and the
evolution of customer service.
Along with the
business program were
several opportunities for
networking and
relaxation including a
golf tournament, a
dinner and two
receptions.
“There seemed to be
a powerful chemistry at
this meeting, said David
Cotter, TCATA CEO.
“There was a very good
showing of ‘first-timers’
and a number of
members volunteered
to become more active
in the association.”
During the
conference, Steve
Mathews of M & B
Hangers assumed the presidency of TCATA, a position he will hold through the 2016 annual
conference.
While installing him as president during the closing dinner, outgoing president Bryant Dunivan
noted that Mathews is a veteran of the drycleaning industry, having worked at R.R. Street for 20
years, most recently as vice president. For the last three years, he has been the western region sales
manager for M & B Hangers.
He has worked on several committees for the TCATA conference, including golf chair, business
program committee and chair of the Thursday dinner event. He also previously served as a board
member.
As president, he follows in the footsteps of his father, Stan, who served as president from 1986 to
1988.
During remarks made while accepting the position at the conference, Mathews talked about his
memories of TCATA and the conference in particular while he was growing up. He said that the
association has always been a special organization to his family.
Special honors at the convention went to the Dow Chemical Co. for celebrating 75 years of
membership in the association.
The company’s history goes back even further. Founded in Midland, MI, by Herbert Dow in 1897,
the company set out to manufacture and sell bleach on a commercial scale. From those beginnings,
Dow has expanded into many areas.
The company made its entry into drycleaning in the mid-1930s, about the same time that
perchloroethylene was coming into use by drycleaners. The company’s Dowper drycleaning solvent is
a water-clear, high quality, stabilized perchloroethylene solvent manufactured by Dow specifically for
drycleaners.
For as long as Dow has served the drycleaning industry, it has worked hand-in-hand with
distributors and their customers to not only meet their needs with a quality product but also to
promote the safe and responsible use of that product.
“We have been serving the needs of the global drycleaning industry for decades,” said Rich Brown,
commercial director and North American marketing manager for Dow. “Dow has a strong
commitment to this industry — one that began long ago, about the time our membership in TCATA
began — and we look forward to continuing to deliver on that commitment.”
Also at the convention, Kevin Lawson of Tri-State Laundry Equipment, Kernersville, NC, was
installed as treasurer. Elected as vice presidents were Alexander Seitz of Seitz, Inc. for the Supply
Manufacturers Group and Tim Grandy of Softrol Systems, Inc. for the Machinery Manufacturers
group. Gerald Henke of Intex Distributing Inc. was re-elected as vice president for the Distributors
Group.
Newly elected board members included Orville Johnson of F. H. Bonn, Robert Blacker of R. R. Street
& Co. Inc., and Gene Williams of American Laundry Products for the Supply Manufacturers Group;
and Henry Padron of Industrial Equipment & Supplies for the Distributors Group.
Re-elected board members for the Machinery Manufacturers Group were Tony Regan of American
Dryer Corp. and Kim Shady of Laundrylux. Re-elected to the board for the Distributors Group were
Gerald Henke of Intex Distributing and Jim Horwath of Horwath Laundry Equipment
TCATA will hold its 2015 Conference at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, CA, July 29 through
August 1.
