The Michigan Institute of Laundering and Drycleaning and the North Carolina Association of
Launderers and Cleaners
have joined several other associations and organizations in the U.S. and
around the world in canceling events in the face of the coronavirus threat.
MILD announced that its summer convention planned for July has been postponed until next
year. Except for the change in dates, now set for Aug. 13-15, 2021, the convention venue and
plans remain the same, MILD said.
“We have been able to secure the same great room rates and activities at Crystal Mountain
Resort for 2021 and Charles Marshall has agreed to be our keynote address speaker,” MILD said in
its announcement.
Also falling victim were two events planned by the North Carolina Association of Launderers and
Cleaners.
A meeting of stakeholders in the Drycleaning Solvent Cleanup Act scheduled for April 30 was
cancelled. NCALC said the next distribution of updated fund statistics is expected during the
summer.
NCALC also had to cancel its spring meeting planned for May 1-3 at the Blockade Runner Beach
Resort at Wrightsville Beach, NC. The association sad it is planning another visit to the Blockade
Runner in Spring 2021, “when hopefully the current virus concerns have become a distant
memory.”
Not canceled is the association’s annual convention set for Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, 2020 at the
Charlotte Marriott City Center in Charlotte, NC.
The Midwest Drycleaning and Laundry Institute also announced that all group gatherings and
educational seminars have been canceled. These include a professional wetcleaning seminar, an
Indiana Pacers game and an onsite meeting of the MWDLI Advisory Council.
“The health and safety of our members, their employees, their families are of utmost importance
and canceling these events comes as the world looks to slow down the spread of the virus, MWDLI
said.
Still on the MWDLI schedule is an August 7-8 annual convention at Hollywood Casino Hotel in
Lawrenceburg, IN.
The Southwest Drycleaners Association in March canceled its trade show that was to be held in
April in Ft. Worth, TX. SDA now plans to hold its next Cleaners Showcase in April in Irving, TX.
Also scheduled for April and now postponed was the Textile Care Allied Trades Association’s
annual conference. The April 29-May 2 event in Hilton Head, SC, was to have been a celebration of
the association’s 100th anniversary.
At this time, none of the other scheduled regional trade shows have been canceled, but
organizers are keeping a wary eye on developments. These include the
South Eastern Fabricare
Association’s

Southern Drycleaners show planned for June 12-14 in Kissimmee, FL; The
California Cleaners
Association’s
Fabricare 2020 show in Long Beach, CA; and the Pennsylvania and Delaware Cleaners
Association’s
Drycleaning and Laundry Expo at Gaylord National Harbor, MD, Nov. 6-8.
Another casualty is the Coin Laundry Association’s Excellence in Laundry conference that was to
take place this month in San Diego. CLA said it is postponing that gathering until May 17-19, 2022
at the same San Diego location, the Rancho Bernardo Inn. CLA said those who had registered for
this month’s event will be refunded their registration fees and the Rancho Bernardo Inn will
automatically cancel all room reservations and refund those charges.
Industry events outside the U.S. have been scuttled, too. The International Drycleaners
Congress
canceled its convention that was to be held in conjunction with the TwinClean conference
sponsored by the Drycleaning Institute of Australia this month in Melbourne, Australia. Both events
have been canceled. TwinClean may try to reschedule for February or March of next year.
Messe Frankfurt’s Texcare International exhibition scheduled for Germany in June was also
postponed. Organizers are hoping the show will go on eventually with dates of Oct. 24-28 under
consideration.
