Fundraising funDCAFA donors get chance to win free cruiseThe Barton bill is yet to be reintroduced in the 106th Congress (SEE ARTICLE IN THE FEBRUARY ISSUE OF NATIONAL CLOTHESLINE), but supporters are laying the groundwork for continuing the campaign in 1999. Hoping to give a shot in the arm to the drive to raise funds for the bill, the Mid-Atlantic Cleaners and Launderers Association has announced that donors to the Dry Cleaners Action Fund of America (DCAFA) will be eligible to win two tickets for a Caribbean cruise. Each donation of $25 to DCAFA will give the donor one chance to win the cruise package valued at approximately $3,000. The cruise, sponsored by MACLA, the Pennsylvania and Delaware Cleaners Association and the North East Fabricare Association, will be Nov. 14-21 aboard the Royal Caribbean's Enchantment of the Seas. Donation tickets will be available through allied trades and volunteer leaders and through the MACLA office. Checks made payable to Drycleaners Action Fund of America can be sent to Cruise Drawing c/o Mid-Atlantic Cleaners and Launderers Association, 7430 Little Chatterton lane, King George, VA 22485. More information is available from the MACLA office, (540) 775-2525. Meanwhile, Barton bill supporters are gearing up to renew their campaign in Congress when Texas Representative Joe Barton reintroduces the legislation. Barney Deden, a leading supporter of the bill, said that within 30 days of the reintroduction he hopes to have at least 100 cosponsors signed on to the bill. Eighty-nine of the bill's sponsors in the last Congress have returned and it will be necessary to get them to re-sign as cosponsors, plus find additional sponsors in the House. "James Mayberry of FLARE is working with me to establish a nationwide network similar to the 1997-98 network to work toward these goals," Deden said. Deden said that the Textile Care Allied Trades Association has agree to lend support by providing information on the industry's contamination problem and on the Barton bill which can be distributed by allied trades representative as the call on cleaners. "Every drycleaner will know about our contamination problem and the solution contained in the Barton bill," Deden said He is also asking each state and regional associaton to send the equivalent of $1 for each drycleaning location in their territories to DCAFA. It's a "very reasonable amount," Deden said, but it has "the potential of a source which will allow us to accomplish our goal." |
